If there is a previous thread on this, I apologize in advance. I searched the site a few different ways and didn't see any sort of a "ball-park" number, and I searched google. I know I can ask a shipping company but I don't want to give out my email, telephone number to a salesman at this point. (I used to work in the moving business in Oregon when I was in college, so I know how the system works).

My family of three, (soon to be four) is thinking very seriously about moving to Fairbanks from Seattle. My wife might have a job opportunity that would really be in our best interest to take. We have a baby due at the end of October, and if she does have the job offer we'd like to leave before Jan 1st for obvious reasons. We are both from Alaska, but haven't lived there in about 20 years. (I am from Ketchikan, she is from Fairbanks)

We have a car that we are debating whether to sell or ship to Fairbanks. We'd drive it, but with a newborn baby in winter that just isn't an option to us. We live in a two bedroom apartment but don't plan on bringing any furniture or "stuff" with us.

I suppose I could have spared the exposition, but just wanted to give an overview of my situation so that I didn't get the old, "Did you search google, noob?" answer.

So my basic questions are... What is someones guess on how much it would be to ship a car from Seattle to Fairbanks? What would someones guess be on how much "half a room's" worth of stuff would cost to ship? Is buying a car/truck in Fairbanks going to be "madly" overpriced? Is driving a car from Anchorage feasible this time of year?

Thanks in advance to anyone that might take the time to reply. Although I have lived in NYC, Los Angeles, Seattle, Portland, etc. since I lived in Alaska, I am very excited about the possibility of going back home. (Although, being from Ketchikan, I have met upper Alaskan snobs down here that tell me Ketchikan isn't really Alaska!)

Boy, isn't this true for every State... too bad in my opinion.

As for your question, I remember numbers being mention in few topics, so I'm sure someone will have an answer for you.

check out www.abf.com
That's what we are looking into for our move.
You can get a trailer or a "Cube" to ship things in...the deliver, you back, they transport.
We were looking at the 12ft trailer option, as we'd be moving stuff from my house, and my friend's house (she's married w/ two kids).
You can go online and get a quote, and they will send you a information DVD too...so far no calls from sales men...

I was quoted $5000 from Green Bay To Anchorage. It was for a 3 bedroom move. I would look in to using other means than abf.

Thanks for all the information. We decided not to move back up to Alaska at this time. We have three teenagers in the lower 48 and still wanted to see them grow into adults. We figured the travel costs would be too much to justify the move. Maybe in a few years...

I grew up an Alaskan and will always be proud to say I am an Alaskan. I sure love you guys. I've never been to a place where the liberals and conservatives aren't afraid of each other, and will hang out in a bar together. Heck, they might even marry.

I mean I'm pretty darned liberal but I've also worked in logging, sawmills, tugboats, commercial fishing, etc.

I just moved up to Fairbanks... from Florida... (arrived on last night's AA flight 127), and I also didn't ship any furniture or household goods. What I did ship, was via the USPS:
  • 200lbs of green coffee beans, via flat-rate Priority Mail
  • Books, CD/DVDs, photos, via Media Mail
  • "The rest", via Parcel Post
It came to just under $700, shipped c/o General Delivery... and they'll hold it for up to thirty days, no charge!

(now I need to rent an apartment and buy a vehicle)
