Just beyond the West Fargo school district, prices generally drop. Another 40 miles they drop more. You might check out Kindred, Casselton, Argusville. Depending on how far you want to go out, might try Enderlin, Grandin, Arthur, Hunter. Cass County has a number of very small towns that have been repopulated with Fargo commuters/work at home types. The further you go out, generally the less expensive. Depending on your work situation, Lisbon might even be possible.
Thinking about living in a small outlying community and working in West Farg, Fargo, or Moorhead?
You must be prepared to be branded "outsider" in most of these small places. Even growing up here, I experienced it. If your parents didn't live there as children, you'll probably get shunned.
Chaffee is not bad, Kindred is not bad, Wheatland is not bad, Absaraka is not bad , Mapleton is more like a suburb than a town, I don't know much about Lisbon or Enderlin, but Casselton is not where you want to live (unless you just live there and spend no other time in the town).
I suggest that you do some calculating about the cost of commuting that extra 40 or 60 miles each day (assuming you live in . My diesel car costs about 10.7 cents/mile (including basic maintenance), I guarantee you'll be looking at double that or worse.
At 10.7 cents, and driving 50 miles per day (approximate round-trip from Casselton) for five days each week, that will cost $26.75 a week, $1391 a year. You'll probably save that in property taxes, but that ignores all of the extra time spent driving, getting fuel, and doing basic maintenance. Keep in mind, my costs are so low because I get about 50mpg and change my oil about every 15k miles (manufacturer recommendation is 20k, for you synthetic haters).
If living in a small place is worth it to you, go for it. I'm just offering some information that you may not have considered.
What are the nicest conservative small towns near Fargo where acreage is available?
The City of Mapleton is 8 miles from West Fargo on the 4 lane interstate which also connects to Fargo & Moorhead. Couldn't ask for a better, closer and smaller community. Is not commercialized. Very cozy.
I've seen some amazing deals on land and/or "fixer-upper" homes in many of the small towns mentioned on this thread and also around the Grand Forks and Park River area. You might want to check that area out as well.
I'd say Dilworth on the Minnesota side. There's a small bit of nothing between that town and Moorhead. Hawley, Minn., has a campaign going on to lure Fargo-Moorhead residents to move out there.
I have an aunt who lives in Hillsboro, which is north of Fargo. Real quiet town right off the interstate. It takes less than an hour to get to.
