Most of us think the movie was way over the top but we see a little bit of ourselves in the characters and dialect. Truth is, the movie was dead-on and my wife and I are constantly acknowledging the the yah suurrres and nooooooo we hear 10 times on the way to work each day. The radio call-in shows in the Twin Cities are full of people calling in standing in their sorrels with a set of jumper cables in their hand lamenting the plight of the Gofoors.
In defense of our Fargo neighbors, I think most of the movie is set in Minneapolis/St Paul and I think Fargo is only mentioned as the place where Carl and Gaear are "from". The Paul Bunyon Statue is in North Dakota and I think the scene where Carl bury's the money was shot there.
They didn't have enough snow to film the Fargo scenes in Fargo. The Paul Bunyan statue was erected up by Pembina (in Bathgate?), so the role of Brainard was played by Bathgate. I think most of the rest of it was shot down by the Cities.
It's funny...Carrie Dee English (the girl who won America's next top model) and has a new reality show on one of the women's networks...she has a hint of the "fargo" accent when she talks...and she is from Fargo. But it is not in a bad way.

Reason: spelling
Nope. The movie was 'set' in Fargo - filmed in Brainerd. Good 'ol Paul is still standing tall there. Whoever was right though, not enough actuall snow in Fargo at the time.
Looks like a great town. Except the accents of course.
Sorry for not spelling it correctly.
