In 1959, Allen Gant Sr. of Glen Raven Mills introduced pantyhose. Stocking manufacturers began using circular knitting machines to reduce manual labor and create seam-free stockings. In 1965, Glen Raven Mills introduced a seam-free version of pantyhose, which coincided with the introduction of the miniskirt. The miniskirt made it unfashionable to show the tops of a woman's stockings, and by the end of the decade pantyhose had replaced stockings almost entirely. This also contributed to a marked shift in foundation undergarment sales: younger women stopped buying girdles around this time. In the same period hosiery started adding spandex or elastane to give it stretch superior to crimping nylon. Glen Raven Mills still operates in North Carolina, U.S. as Glen Raven Inc.
Prior to 1914 Jacob's Brassiere patent, the corset was the closest thing to a bra and it goes back deep into history. Liz
Just bumming around now as SAHM, no need for such decor...however, when dressing-to-the-nines, I still don micro-fishnets or other non-trampy tights (think Anthropologie)...too old for the loud stuff I wore in the 80's.
Professionally, when I was in such a position, I was REQUIRED to wear hosiery (no bare legs or feet) and didn't have a problem with that, but I opted for the more fashionable netting or dark opaques rather than straight-up, everyday nylons...
I still think silk Cuban heels are worth the bother.
I can't stand panty-hose. I gave them up long ago along with caring what others think if I don't wear them even for formal events. U can find a lot of after 5 pantsuits so u can wear knee hi stockings or if u must go with a shorter dress thigh-hi hosery is also a nice option or u can do none of the above. I don't care if a woman does not have on hose. I think it is a personal preference and for the most part I choose to hosery free!
Well, for those of you who have worn both pantyhose and stockings and a garter belt, which is actually easier? I'm beginning to think it might be easier to go with stockings. As far as the thigh high pantyhose, they would drive me nuts and I'd be tugging at them to make sure they weren't falling down, regardless of whether they were or not!
Let me say that I’m just glad that this topic hasn’t gotten into thong underwear yet. The bras, pantyhose, and stockings are about all my mind can picture so far. Pulling things up and keeping things covered is a hard job these days no matter who invented what to wear.
Bras? We once burned them in public to get attention for the ERA
