I'm not sure if this belongs in health and wellness or here. Anyways. I used to be able to wear any kind of earring as well as fashion earrings. A few years ago I developed some kind of strange allergy. Any kind of earring I wear even 14 k gold give me an infection and causes a lot of pain. I haven't tried 18k.
I even bought nickel free earrings from an on-line specialty shop and even those bother me.
Anyone else have this problem? Any idea what coud be causing it. I'd really love to be able to wear earrings again.

Ask a dermatologist? If it's some allergy, maybe he/she can direct you to some other type of material.

Would a dermatologist know? Or an allergist. I'm going to the dermatologist later this month anyways.

It seems to me a dermatologist (a decent one) would know (at least be able to diagnose correctly if it's a skin condition, allergy, whatever)

I have that problem. Often, it's a reaction to other metals in the earrings. I have lots of holes in my ears and I only wear titanium, and it's been fine. Maybe that will work for you?

Have you tried cortisone cream? That helps me a lot. Dab of lavender oil takes away the sting too, but make sure you dilute it first.

If I wear cheap earrings then the same thing happens to me so If I really want to wear them I paint the stem and any part that touches my skin with clear nail polish..... It doesn't give you the root of the problem but it may solve the rash temporarily.....

It's not petty. I have problems with earrings too. I think the problem is that I wear cheap earrings and the metal flakes. The nicer ones I have, I wash the posts with soap and water every time, and I dab on some Neosporin before putting them in. That helps, unless the metal is flaking, and then they hurt within an hour.
