I've decided to grow out my beard for a month as a tribute for my fallen doggy. Don't ask me why one has to do with the other but it felt like a good idea when I thought of it. This is the first time I've ever grown out my facial hair and it looks god awful. I have about 2 weeks left before I shave it.

Are there any women who prefer beads on a fellow? Any dudes rocking a beard?

My beard is somewhat patchy and only about 2 cm's long and I'm Mediterranean!

2 weeks isn't enough time for most men to grow a decent beard; you need to accept that it is going to look bad for the first month, maybe even 6 weeks. Resist the urge to trim it before then, otherwise you are going to make it worse. just give it time, the mistake most guys make is to get freaked out about it before it has time to grow and shave or trim the hell out of it. just ignore it for the time being. and ignore everybody's negative comments, that is to be expected; people expect you to look the way you have always looked and can't deal with change; its their issue, not yours.

Long bears are also a perfect breeding ground for loads of nasty stuff, as well as a "safety" net for food. So unless you wash that thing hourly, then it'll be dirty.

I've had a beard for 36 years and you are just anti beard for some reason. As long as you wash it in the shower every day, perhaps a combing during the day it will be just as pleasant as any clean persons hair. I've seen guys that only have mustaches that are far more disgusting. I guess they don't think those need any care.

Good luck with your beard, man. I hope it comes in well.

I've toyed with growing a goatee, and I've let it grow out a few days, but as you know, there's a period when it looks pretty bad and I haven't been able to get through that period without shaving it off.

The other issue is that my hair is graying, and I think dark facial hair looks the best. So I remain clean-shaven for now, though I like to grow 1-2 days of razor stubble when circumstances allow.

Exactly. Beards aren't inherently dirty. Like any other hair, whether it's clean or not depends on whether it is kept clean.

The 'dirty beard' reputation goes back to at least the 1960s, when beards were associated with hippies and people who eschewed personal hygiene. But that's just an image. It's perfectly possible to have a clean beard.

I agree, leave it alone and don't expect it to look good for at least 4-6 weeks.

I grew a full beard some winters, and thought it looked terrible for the first few weeks, but grew it anyways for warmth.
I have sparser number of whiskers on my cheeks than under my chin, so that's why I didn't think it would look any good.
It still wouldn't look good if I wanted a "designer" beard that's clipped to say 1/4" long, (1-2 weeks growth?)
but as it grew to at least 1/2" long and became comb-able it started looking nice.

Also found that for the first 5 weeks I can always "feel" the beard like it's something annoying stuck to my face,
but after that it gets long enough and soft enough I can forget about it, just like you probably don't notice your eyebrows.

Best looking beard on me is about 3/4-1 inch whiskers, combed.
That takes about 1.75-2.5 months to grow for me.
I clip the parts of the beard that naturally stick out,
just like in gardening one might trim a hedge for denser even looking growth.
I look like the Captain Highliner fishstick guy with that.

If you have whiskers that are different colours, try using dye to even out the colour.
It will make your beard look denser if you have light coloured whiskers mixed with dark ones.

Nonsense, old wives tale, urban legend, or just stupid statement. I've had a full beard since 1974.
