The only other retro sneakers I wear are Vans, but I like the fit of Converse better.
Weren't the Vans what Spiccoli (Sean Penn) wore in "Fast Times at Ridgemont High?"

Yup, but the ones I wear are suede lace-up skate-styled shoes, not the canvas slip on checkerboard ones Sean Penn wears in the movie.

Yeah really; do Chucks EVER go out of style?

Converse All-Stars were definitely waaayyyy out of fashion in the early and mid-70s. Only the truly geeky at my high school -- or the basketball players, on the court only -- wore them; Adidas and Nikes were the rage. The punk rockers -- geeks themselves, mostly -- brought them back into style.

But since then, they seem to go through ebbs and resurgences, instead of being truly out of fashion. Their status is usually reflected in the price -- when they're hot, they're expensive.

I think that's true. For years, very few people wore them, especially when they were first supplanted by the then-up-and-comers like Adidas, Puma and later Nike.

They're not taken seriously as a basketball shoe anymore, but people wear them for lounging around. They have a grungy vibe to them.

Remember the old Pro-Keds? They were a competitor to Converse and were actually more popular for a while. They've never made a comeback the way Converse has.

I'd also say that right now, Adidas is making a big comeback. I noticed a lot of people wearing them today.

I used to have purple pumas like that. I love those shoes. Check out Gola if you like that type of look. They have a lot of streamlined retro looking sneakers. Super comfy too.

When did you have them in purple?

I'm going off the deep end with this retro sneaker craze of mine. I just ordered a pair of these:
