I suppose in a nice climate where you do a lot of walking with them and wear them out much, they won't last long.
But for an average pair (I mean one that is of typical price and sees moderate wear), what is a good lifespan? Folks I've talked, both guys and girls, to seem to have them for up to a couple to a few years, although I seem to have the impression that flip-flops seem also to be seen as expendable or disposable footwear that may be tossed out in a year/season.

If there ever was a throw away shoe by design the foam flops are it. Better quality flops should last long in line with their use.
i buy reefs, and go through them every 2 years like clockwork.
some people spend money on leather ones like rainbows, which tend to last a long time -- maybe 3 or 4 years with heavy use, especially if you don't get them wet.
The new models from Old Navy are cr*p and last a season. I have found that the men's versions are a little sturdier and last longer. The white ones I usually buy at the start of summer and discard at the start of winter. They just get too grungy to wear beyond that.
I have a few pairs of the more solid Old Navy types from 4-5 years ago that are hanging in there. They are the ones I don't wear everyday due to the fact that either they don't match very much or I'm petrified to wear them out.
I also have one pair of O'Neills and a couple leather pair that have lasted years.
depends on the quality. I have several from Old Navy in different colors. Poor quality, but I have so many, I don't wear any one pair all that often. Some I've have for several years.
Depends on the quality. I had 2 pairs of really nice flip flops from Aldo that lasted six years of heavy use. One pair died this summer. They were all leather (except the sole). Even the footbed. I was sad when they died because they still looked really good. I still have the other pair.
I had a pair of Kenneth Cole Reaction slides last year. They lasted the whole season, but that was all. The structure was OK but the footbed was trashed. This year I bought another pair of the same slides (another $28) and a pair of Kenneth Cole New York slides which are holding up much better.
It's conceivable that the el cheapo ones would not last that long but you never know. My S.O. had some A&F slides that lasted six years.
