In the south they're very popular and also in Ohio. I like the little tiny ones for a dash of color, and I have a big tote that has a pocket for everything. I think their popularity MAY have something to do with the fact that they don't GO with much of anything. I think they sort of free a woman from the tyranny of matchy-matchy. They are just an explosion of color that is cheerful.

Not necessarily. I live in Western North Carolina and while they were extremely popular about 2-3 years ago, you very rarely, if ever, see one now.

I personally loathe them. I didn't like them when they were popular and I don't like them now. I find them way to common and as another poster put it .. very "home ec-ish".

They are for really old ladies. I think they are hideous!

No really, I do.

I had to google Vera Bradley bags because I've never seen anyone carrying them in either LA or NYC. These bags seem like very grandma-ish yarn/knitting bags and truly lack style.

Yes, no Vera Bradley in NYC but you will find them in CT.

Will have to check out Lemon Hill. Some of the Hallmark stores around here carry Stephanie Dawn bags, not as many styles or patterns as VB but very nice, nonetheless, and a few dollars less - and I believe they're made in the good old USA which is a plus (I think VB bags are now made in China but I'm not positive).

The reason they are popular in CT is because they are very preppy, same as Lilly Pulitzer.

I never associated Vera Bradley with "preppy"......? Are they thought of that way?

When I think of preppy handbags, I guess I think of Coach, Dooney and Bourke, Brighton......

Yes, the bags are considered incredibly preppy! I graduated from a very preppy college in CT and almost all of my female classmates carried their books around in Vera Bradley bags. The look: flip flops, Uggs, or white Nikes with straight designer jeans; a North face jacket with Abercrombie or American Eagle shirt; ribbon headband; and poker straight brown hair--paired with a yellow or pink based Vera Bradley bag. Only the super upscale girls carried Coach and they were also the only ones that wore heels to school.

I had to Google Vera Bradley too. From the comments I was picturing some ugly crocheted carpet bag thing! Those purses aren't my style but they're not heinous. This is the kind of thing stay at home moms in Newport Beach take with them when they drive Brighton and Hannah to their playdates.
