My mom grew up in the 50s/60s, and I've looked through her high school yearbooks many, many times. Thin girls, obese girls, chubby girls, average girls, athletic girls, etc., all over all the pages. I don't know that looking to people like Marilyn Monroe, who made their money off their appearances, and what clothing sizes they wore, are really valid examples of "what women look like," in any particular era.

Women come in different sizes and shapes. Always have.
Well I can tell you that is VERY hard to find vintage (in my case 1950s and older is what I specialize in) clothing in larger sizes. Anything over a modern size 10 sells for a premium price because those sizes are so hard to find.

The average waist size on most of my 50s dresses I sell is about 25. If I find something with a 30 inch waist it's like striking gold.

Perhaps that's the clothing that got saved, being likely the most stylish.

Average women in the 50s absolutely were thinner - go look at your own family photos as evidence. The reason for the difference between then and now is our modern food supply is quite horrible, and the worst foods receive the highest amount of federal subsidies and as such are the cheapest.

The average modern-day overweight woman isn't fat due to gluttony at all, she is fat due to the terrible foods we Americans have created in order to provide ourselves with the highest number of calories at the lowest price. It isn't her fault!

So for instance in 1955 if you bought a loaf of bread from the supermarket it contained wheat, yeast, water and salt... today's loaf of bread contains these things plus sugar, and a lot of it, because it is a CHEAP calorie and a preservative so it can be transported across long distances easily, and sit on the shelves longer without going stale. We are a nation of sugar addicts thanks to the heavy corn subsidies, and that is why we are now a nation of fatties.

So because I am thin, I don’t have a “real†woman’s body?

And why is it is ok for a larger person to make fun of a thin person (skinny *****), but if the thin person does the same thing it’s discrimination?

I have friends who are all shapes and sizes and I love them all the same, but I don’t think it’s right for this kind of thing to be encouraged.

Does anyone agree?
It's nothing new. They've been celebrating it for more than 5 hundred years.

^^^This....100% the truth!

It is very sad that so many are caught up in the "you're too fat" and "you're too skinny" bickerfest when the real question should be "How did America get to this point" and "What has happened to our food supply?" "What is being fed to us as a nation"

We need to ask ourselves why it is cheaper to feed our families junk versus good healthy, nutritious food.

We need to change our mindset about what we are eating because it is killing us as a nation.

We need to stop thinking that it is a "Nanny State" mentality to implement a healthier change for our students....America's children are at a very great risk for many weight-related health problems. And we do not need people pushing the idea that Twinkies are a "health" food. We are killing ourselves.

This thread is like a roomful of morbidly obese people arguing over the last twinkie.

Indeed, the bickering, the finger pointing, the name calling, the "nanny state" arguments, its all about making sure we the people don't notice that our own tax money is being used to slowly kill us while lining the pockets of corporate interests. It's just another wedge between the haves and the have nots... the more affluent people are, the less likely they are to eat the garbage our country produces as "food." I am 40 years old and still have hips that are 36" but to be honest it isn't because I have great genes or I am better than my fatter peers. It's because I earn a good living and don't have kids so my money is all for me. If I had to support a family with my salary I'd most likely be fat too.

I'm going to call it "Nanny State" mentality because it is. Sorry.
