This might be an odd question for this forum but it was brought to mind as I was having a conversation about getting rid of old, favourite shoes.

There's obviously the idea in our culture about women having closetfuls of of shoes and getting attached to them, and not wanting to get rid of them. On the other hand though, you have the stereotype of women being quick to discard the unfashionable items when they go out of style, and conversely telling their husbands or boyfriends to get rid of old sentimental things.

A couple of my female friends told me that they don't think they feel any more sentimental about throwing out favourite shoes than men do and that its not really gender-specific.

Any thoughts?

If they are out of style and worn, out they go.

Shoot, I can attach sentimental value to a pair of undies or socks.

I'm one of those women who have a hard time getting rid of any clothing let alone shoes. I love shoes (it's genetic in my family) and for years had to wear classic high heeled pumps for work and had them in every color imaginable. Since I wear a ridiculous size 5 shoe and that size is hard to find I kept them (the old "just in case" excuse). I think there were over 75 pairs of shoes in my closet (okay maybe more).

Last year went "cold turkey" and donated most of them (they were in very good shape) chucked the rest, packed them & the clothing to Goodwill. I had that stuff so long I actually found clothes wth the label "Made in America". That stuff I kept. Purging that closet was like a catharsis.

Sentimentality certainly played a part in the hoarding but practicallity too. Looking at every pair of shoes I'd think "they are so pretty" or "I always loved that blouse" or "I'll never find that color again in my size". Discovered you have to be ruthless and just pare down to your all time favorites.

And literally a couple of weeks later after I gave away 10 pairs of stretch pants and a few slouch boots I found out that are coming back in style.

If I don't wear them often, or no longer have the "outfit" that went with the shoe, out they go....no sense in keeping clutter around!

I don't really own that many shoes. And I don't have any trouble getting rid of the old ones when it's time to get replacements.

But my kids' baby/toddler shoes - that's a whole different story. I've got a box of those cute little shoes and I can't seem to part with them.

Apart from a few pairs, I replace my shoes every 2-3 years. By then, if they're not worn out, I've found "something else".
