I've always thought sarees to be beautiful and fascinating.

Non-Indian people wear sarees sometimes. British women in India would wear them while the country was part of the British empire--do "western" women wear them in India today? Here in the Midwest, my friend wore a saree to prom just because she liked it and it looked good on her. She isn't Indian but looks the part.

She is gorgeous and looks more elegant in these sarees but these are not trendy outside India. Women wear these sarees but occasionally

I have some that I wore when I was in countries where they are worn. They aren't the formal, embellished ones pictured, though...much more simple. Everyday versus dress/ceremonial. Here, I sometimes wear them, but not in the traditional wrap...usually repurposed as a wrap skirt or twisted and tied as a sundress.

OP, Wear whatever you like! Just match the cloth and design to the occasion so that you don't stand out (more than you think you already will). You may get stares for wearing a silk zari work sari too a casual event. You may think that people are staring because you do not look Indian but it will be because they are wearing jeans!

In certain areas of NYC they are common enough due to the expat Indian community. So I think most NYers would take it for granted seeing women wearing sarees in public.

I don't think I've seen any non-Indian women wearing them here, but why not? I think they're beautiful and colourful, I love how in India a lot of women still wear it when the rest of the world is starting to wear the same fashions...

I think sarees should stick to Indians. When I was in India and saw white people wearing a saree it looked so weird.

I believe they are beautiful and always love to see native Indian woman wearing them, especial here in America (where the traditional attire these days is something tight, short, and exposing T&A)...
