What city or area of the country is credited with starting the emo movement/trend/fashion/culture, whatever you want to call it?

From the urban dictionary:

Emo
Genre of softcore punk music that integrates unenthusiastic melodramatic 17 year olds who dont smile, high pitched overwrought lyrics and inaudible guitar.

Emo is a style or fashion just as grunge was. You had grunge music then you had the grunge attire. The definition of their music you provided seems on point.

If you have not seen or recognized the emo fashion that is prevalent in today's youth, and especially common in the middle 2000's then you either don't get out much or you live in a very secluded society.

That was started back in the 1980s and peaked 10 years ago here, though was never that popular, and is now all but dead. It may be still common in other areas but not in Seattle.
