My brothers used to bust out shorts all through the winter when they were in middle/high school (late eighties, early nineties). My dad always gave them crap about it.

I think it is ignorance. A lot of styles from my generation are very tacky and ignorant. Why wear clothes for warm weather with clothes for cold weather? It looks so stupid.

The anatomy of the human body is such that vital internal organs are all in the chest and abdomen. It is more important to keep those organs warm than it is to keep your legs warm.
It's not really much different than wearing a shirt and a coat (2 layers) and pants (1 layer).
Go outside in the cold with 3 pairs of pants on and no shirt.
Go outside in the cold with no pants on and 3 shirts.
I see many people wearing this fashion lately, especially women. How did this style come about?
I like hoodies when it is a little on the cool side. It kind of goes against the fact if you wear shorts though, doesn't it? I started wearing them when I rode my Harley. All the guys started doing this around that time. I still like them for a cool night on the lake when I'm fishing or going out. They provide great cover for concealment as well.
