The acne certainly isn't your fault, nor can you be required to cover it up if that makes the breakouts worse. I would suspect that it wasn't that one particular issue that was so much the problem, just that the others in combination gave off an overall "young" appearance. Too much layering (or not the right kind of layering) in tops can look very young. Having naturally wild hair (I hear you!) in a half-ponytail likely didn't help. The slightly too-short skirt may have sealed the deal. So a slightly longer skirt or slacks paired with your hair pulled back into a neat bun may make a huge difference.
You also might look at what your manager is wearing, and what other coworkers are wearing. It's pretty common when you're really young (in your 20's) to have to work extra hard to look older, especially if your workplace has mostly older workers. Even if it's slightly older than you'd prefer, lots of people have a few outfits that they rotate through for work and don't really wear at other times. It's just part of having to conform to a dress code.
no no! lol, I never worn that skirt at this job and its not really even that short (I'm only 5'4" so everything looks long on me), just a couple inches above my knees. I was just wondering if I could wear it.
My manager dresses similarly to what I wear but she tends to wear a lot of vests and I don't like them for whatever reason. My other coworker who is about a year older than me has the same problem I'm having with maturing her look. I guess I will just have to rotate a couple of items in my closet. I'm only there about 2 times a week most weeks anyways.
Sierra-that sounds like something I should try! Especially since diabetes runs in my family and I can't seem to avoid sugar (dang sweet tooth!). I pass that New Life almost every day!
Marissy-the first picture, the women look like men...eww. But I like the 2nd one!
hey nikkay, most of my clothes actually come from these stores and they're appropriate (though NY&Co. tends to run huuuuge on me)...they're just not all black and white and in the combination they want. At the moment I'm strapped for cash for more clothes plus they don't pay me enough. I have the shoes you described too. They didn't have anything to say about my shoes and I do have a few black and white stuff to work with, just not enough. I am only allowed to wear the jewelry that my store sells which they let me borrow on every shift.
I can definitely try those hair ideas!
May I ask why they want you to wear only black & white? Hm...Try asking a co-worker if they could give you some ideas. Or in all honesty, if your boss has such a problem with how you dress you may want to ask them for advice. Just be like 'Hey, I was thinking about the convo we had about dressing more maturely. I was wondering if you could tell me something you thought would be appropriate. I just want to make sure we're on the same page." Something along those lines. Some may think this is weird but if your boss isn't an ass he/she should understand and be more than happy to show you what he/she thinks is appropriate. They should have gone over this when they hired you. Since you're tight on cash, look in places like Target and Walmart on clearance. You could always go to somewhere like the Salvation Army or Goodwill just be sure to wash your clothes before wearing them. If you seriously just can't afford anything right now, ask friends and family for some $$ you can use and pay them back or see if they have any outfits you can borrow.
Velvet - wow! I had no idea of those issues with Spironolactone. I'm glad you shared that info. My dermatologist did tell me to drink lots of water, but I just figured all doctors say that - our family doctor is always telling us this, too. And I've always been good about drinking water. I try to drink half my body weight in ounces every day, or more if I've been more active than usual or it's hot.
The only thing he warned me about was how if I were pregnant or became pregnant while using Spironolactone that it would harm the fetus, which is why you absolutely cannot take it prior to becoming or while preggers. I didn't take it for very long. Once my skin cleared up I stopped taking it and my skin has been clear since. Once in a blue moon I'll get a pimple while on my period, usually at my jawline which is really weird because when I had the breakout problem initially it was on my forehead and cheeks, but anyway... now I only get one or two small ones very rarely.
I have to admit, I'm often bad about reading the warnings that come along on the info sheet that you get when you pick up your prescriptions. I'm wondering now if there was something about the potassium listed there. There probably was. I need to be better about reading all the info on those sheets instead of just trusting my doctors 100% and going off what they tell me.
I thought it was just a myth . I don't eat as much sweets as other people do, but its still a bad addiction and that's my only dietary fault, lol.
nikkay-I'm not sure why we can only wear black and white and in the ways they want it. Must be corporate rules I guess. I can't even wear mixed black and white prints as a dress. It has to be solid black if its a dress (no white dresses) and only solid white on top and only solid black on bottom. I have a ton of black and white clothes with either pin-stripes or patterns that are ruled out as well. I'm actually very very strapped for money. I may just have to borrow clothes for now or rotate a few outfits. Oh and the wild hair thing you mentioned, I don't have "wild" hair, its just wavy and ya it can make me look really young. I just don't always have time to straighten my hair so I have to put it back on those days.
Well if you have been to the docs for it, its a medical condition and they can't fault you on that one. I don't know how recently you tried proactive but the newest version is different. I guess they have a gentle formula too but I did not try that one. But the newest regular one is a lot more gentle than the very old sudsy bubble one that they first had out. That old version stripped the crap out of my skin.
That version of ProActiv bleached my clothes when I used it on my back. No joke.
