Maybe it was just a better alternative to the GTL look.

i dont buy your "fact." ive never known girls to actually prefer a look that you are describing. you are actually suggesting that girls preferred a guy with a beer belly? i am 2 years older than you so we are dealing with the same people basically. while guys could do well not being great dressers or beefcake, being sloppy and fat was never a preference. but the more important thing is being personable, confident and engaging.

We may be close to the same age, but I doubt we are dealing with the same people.
I assume you are in New Jersey, and I went to college in the deep south. I would bet that the shaggy-haired, dirty-white-baseball-cap, beer gut guys who scored a lot at my school wouldn't have nearly as much success in Seaside Heights or anywhere else in Jersey (or NYC or Philly). But it is undeniable that they were a big hit at my southern school.
Even though I don't use hair product, I take less than 10 minutes to get ready to go out (excluding a shower), and I rarely even look in the mirror, lots of women I went to school with said I was "too into myself" simply because I went to the gym every day! I still got a decent amount of action, but GTL gave me no advantage over the slobs, and maybe even a slight disadvantage.
That was the culture at my school, believe it or not.

haha alright, i guess i cant speak for the entire country, just seems like a strange preference to me. new jersey isnt really the people you see on the jersey shore. those people are primarily coming down from new york and they arent appreciated my many new jersey types. but we arent shaggy beer belly types either. i went to college in dc (gwu) and it was a lot of north east people and some from around the country.

Interestingly enough, a popular "career path" for graduates of my college is to spend a couple of years in DC working on the Hill and then go to law school. It is amazing how many of them get a haircut, start hitting the gym, and learn how to do laundry the right way after a few weeks in DC.
Of course, a lot of that has to do with the requirement of looking professional for their jobs, but the social dynamic there is also MUCH different than what most of them are used to.

I like to work out, I keep a good skin tone (mostly naturally), and I try to dress nicely. However, I'm not sure that GTL is the be-all-and-end-all that they make it out to be on Jersey Shore.
When I was in college, shaggy hair, beer bellies, and a general unkempt appearance were actually seen as fashionable. I was a clean cut, decent looking guy who hit the gym (I still am), and I pulled less tail than a lot of sloppy losers. I'm 28 now, but I still see college kids embracing this style, so I'm guessing not much has changed.
In areas where hipsters have a strong presence, it is frequently the pale, skinny, pierced guys who have the best luck. A well-dressed guy with a tan and muscles is viewed as shallow or a conformist.
In summation, I think it depends on where you live and what crowd you run with. In South Beach, GTL is king. In Asheville, North Carolina, not so much.
Just for fun, how important is GTL where you live and socialize? Is it important that a guy have a buff body, a good tan, and clean, pressed, trendy clothes to pick up the chicks?

To the statement in bold, it all depends where you are. Over here in NYC, its not the most attractive fashion by far unless you go to frat boyish bars like the Gin Mill. There you could have a little beer belly, where a backwards ball Holister or Ambercrombie and Fitch Cap and button down short sleeve collar shirt and watch college sports, then you get women in droves. If you go to the L.E.S of Manhattan, then the second statement in bold applies to get women.
To answer your question though, over here in the East Bronx the GTL lifestyle is what attracts most of the women and men in the area. The same thing if you go to certain places in Queens, Brooklyn and Staten Island, and the Mecca of GTL in New York: Long Island, you can find a strong and heavy GTL way of life I guess you can say . What you see on the Jersey Shore is no exaggeration or misinterpretation in those areas, its alive and well! Heck, you might see even worst! Even some other ethnic groups embrace it who might live in the GTL population (mainly Hispanics(Puerto Ricans, Columbians, Cubans) and Asians (Chinese/Koren/Vietnamese) and other Whites (like Albanians, Russians and some other Eastern European groups). Manhattan has a 0% GTL population over there but you can of course see them comes in legions to clubs like Webster Hall or Pacha.

No GTL in Manhattan? NYC is one place I have actually never been, but I never would have guessed that.
What is the social dynamic like there? I had always just assumed it was very image-conscious. Maybe it is, but the ideal "image" is something other than tan and buff?

GTL is for trashy types. it is only in NJ in those few shore towns during the summer. the nj shore town i go to, those types arent welcome and they arent welcome in the rest of the state except for random groups of d-bags. maybe some place like bayonne or some other craphole.
you want to find them you go to place in the outer boroughs of nyc like staten island, brooklyn, bronx and parts of long island.

This raises an interesting question. In cosmopolitan areas such as Manhattan, certain aspects of GTL obviously help with social standing. You want to be in shape (which usually involves going to the gym), and you want to have clean, pressed clothes. I'm guessing the tan is optional in a northern climate like New York.
However, "GTL" itself seems to be frowned upon. Considering that most socialites in NYC are practicing two to three of the aspects of GTL, why do they disdain that lifestyle? Is it that they like to go the gym and wear nice clothes, they just don't like people who TALK about it all the time (like the Jersey Shore crew)? Is it the fact that they feel the GTL crew overdoes each aspect of that lifestyle and they would rather opt for a normal, average-to-athletic body instead of a Muscle & Fitness body with a deep tan? Is it somewhat of a combination between the two?
As a southerner who has never been to NYC, I am simply curious. Definitely not looking to debate anyone on this issue because I have no clue.
