The thrift stores in my area are usually just as expensive as buying new
I go in there every once in a while and find something decent, but usually their stuff is in bad shape and just not worth buying. I was looking for a kitchen table and they had an okay looking one, but they wanted $250 for it...went on craigslist and found a better one for half the price.
I shop at thrift shores, but not for clothing. (Maybe accessories.) I'm usually looking for old books. But there is a service organization in a town near me that has a lot of very wealthy members. They have a tent sale every few months and I like to see what they've got for sale. I've seen some VERY nice items there (many vintage in great shape) at great prices.
do any of you buy clothes etc from Salvation Army, Goodwill etc?
I know a lot of people that love shopping an get great stuff and then you have people who are so against wearing pre-owned merch.
My latest find was a pair of Calvin Klien Jeans for .50 cents, Donna Karen Jeans $4.00, A vintage suede mini dress by Mary Quant for $6.00
I do all the time..and I dress very nice...I wear name brand clothes too..No one really believes where I get my clothes..I have women at work who want to go shopping with me..I love the thrift stores..
We have one really great consignment shop where I live - they are super picky about what they will accept, and only keep stuff for 60 days. Their prices are excellent. I often find really great name brand items there- but in the $10-20 range, usually.
The GoodWill in my neighborhood gets tons of nice stuff- so if you know what to look for, you can find some good clothes there as well.
Not everything is old, worn or used in thrift stores. I found in one thrift store - in the posh neighborhood of Chestnut Hill - a new suit (the trousers were not yet hemmed and the tags were still in the jacket) by Hart, Schaffner & Marx ... a $1000 suit for about $35. After the tailor hemmed it, the fit was perfect! This thrift shop is run by rich old ladies to benefit a local hospital.
One thing I miss about the US is the Goodwill and the rest of the thriftstores...they're starting to catch on here more and more though...I love them and have no problem wearing second hand clothing, except shoes and underwear..
