looking to make a synthetic(faux) fur in one of these styles. I can't decide as they are both very glamorous and unique, but which do you find nicer? Also, less matronly? Would be worn to church and special occasions. I can't decide which fabric to buy as I like them both.

For some reason a women in a long fur coat on a city bus seems incongruent.

Wow, sewing either coat with faux fur is a way more complicated project than I would attempt . I've only worked with faux fur a couple of times, some stuffed animals for my daughter and "minky" fabrics for some Christmas stockings. That stuff gets everywhere, it took awhile to clean my machines afterwards...

I think that that hard part sewing a coat that full and long with faux fur would be that the faux fur can be kinda stiff compared to the real thing and it would be hard to get it to fall right. I'd love to hear how your project goes!

.....which do I think is a better coat for you to wear to church, etc.

The first one (subway or bus) looks much nicer. The other is too big in the shoulders and would make you look like a line-backer.

I would definitely look to the first coat on the NYC bus. The style is timeless, and looks good on just about every woman, especially since you can modify the size of the shawl collar to suit your own body type. And, yes, furs are worn in many situations in the city, so I would not be surprised to find someone wearing a full length coat on a bus.

Agreed. I don't like the second one. Too voluminous.

I like the cut of the first one better. As for what sort of faux fur to use, pick whichever works best with your hair color (or hat color) and complexion. Those tawny-cream furs look best on women with olive tones in their skin. A white or pale silver looks better on a cooler-hued complexion.
