Before designer brand stores or department stores like Barney's or Nordstrom showed up in your town or state, where did you buy designer brands(when you had money to afford it)? My great aunt use to order Chanel catalogs to buy their purses.

The old high end department stores had designer items. Neiman Marcus,I Magnin,Henri Bendel etc. Of course the Jet Set just bought them in Paris etc.

This is also the reason my mother sewed. Department stores had fine fabric departments back then. She made the typical little girl clothes for us, but for herself -- only Vogue Designer. And she sewed beautifully, using a lot of couture sewing techniques. I learned a lot from her, and a few of her teachings got me in trouble in our junior high sewing class... the one that threw the teacher was pressing the tissue pattern.

I can still remember my sister went to her prom in a white silk Yves Saint Laurent halter dress. I found the pattern online for sale a couple of years ago. If I recall correctly, I beleive when you bought the Vogue Designer patterns they included a label to stitch in...

Bonwit Teller, Bendel's , Saks - that's where my mom shopped.

Also Lohmann's. Not sure if they are all over the country. Off price designer.
