My dad used to freeze his jeans before ironing them for a perfect crease. As he got older, he relaxed on keeping his jeans pressed, but when I was a kid he had this really long ritual before ironing jeans.

No it was really to keep them nice and stiff. He washed, wrapped in newspaper, put it in the fridge until it dried, and then ironed with starch.

When your jeans stink it's time to wash them.
I have never heard of popping them in the freezer.
