was watching an old movie the other night... Vertigo with Jimmy Stewart and the lovely Grace Kelly, who turned up in his tiny messy looking flat to visit... wearing a flouncy ballerina length ballgown, hat and long gloves, and all this during the day... what were they thinking back then.. not only that but she proceeded to climb up a drainpipe and through a window wearing this garb...

If it was Grace Kelly, it was Rear Window -- Vertigo starred Stewart and Kim Novak and was 4 years later.

As to the clothing -- very full dresses (they weren't ball gowns) were the fashion, after the stark slimmed down military like silhouette of the war years. Long gloves during the day was literary license... Those were always evening gloves. And hats were also part of the standard look of the day.

I like looking at stuff like that, but I much prefer our casual looks today.

oh what was I thinking there, I just watched the movie toosilly me of course it was Rear Window... I was in those days so remember the fashions of the time but they were just daft and didnat fit in with real women on a daily basis at all.. when she climbed the drainpipe in the designer cocktail dress , I found it amusing..beautiful dresses though...

Nothing daft about it.

Quite elegant, actually.

Those dresses, hats, gloves, shoes, bags, etc. were in style, and I don't see why a woman can't climb a drainpipe wearing anything she damn well chooses to wear.

Yeah, but shinnying up a drainpipe will ruin your stockings... and probably massively screw up the net in the crinolines. Pipe from that era is NOT smooth...

oh dear I see we have a lack of humour on here... actually I remember girls going on buses years ago in the fifties wearing big picture hats, just cant imagine that in the days of jeans and trainers.... sneakers to some... Im trying to inject a wee laugh and a bit of humour into the thread.....but I see its lead balloon time..

I think it's awesome. I love the way we used to dress! It was classy and elegant, something the culture seems to lack these days.

Exactly! Bring back elegance. I went to the opera the other day. Me and one other woman had on a dress...and the men wore shorts. amazing.
