I also wonder if Scottish and Roman women wear the same thing, or else how do they differentiate gender?

I think long pants were considered sort of barbaric back then.

Everyone wore some kind of loin cloth, skirt, kilt, etc until pants were developed to make long days of riding horses easier. Then, wearing pants became a sign of wealth because it meant you had a horse.


So, only more recently did it become another means of differentiating gender but with so many women wearing pants and young punk rockers wearing kilts - it seems it will all come full circle at some point.

You can see Marcus Aurelius wearing a skirt, riding a horse.

'Skirts' or 'dresses' were closest to what the majority of humans in all cultures wore until very recently.
