Boat shoes should be worn without socks....as should sandals!
Many men will wear the low-cut sports socks with their sports shoes...the sock comes only to the top of the shoe.
Dress socks are thinner, and usually have a very faint pattern to them....casual, everyday socks are generally thicker and solid colored. You can get them in lengths above the ankle (mid-calf) to knee length...that depends on what YOU like!
Aren't dress socks usually dark colored, to match dress pants and dress shoes? Why do they have a very faint pattern?
