My daughter in law is an immigrant..she thinks a lot of American styles are very cool...She spent over 200 bucks on a pair of ripped jeans...I just don't see the sense in that.

Sounds like an outlier. Typically immigrants here make fun of American style. They might wear a RL polo shirt but they will make it look clean cut with a nice pair of shoes.

Maybe a J crew shirt but with a pretty well put together outfit.

Buy a pair and rip them yourself. It's more fun.

When we were kids tears in the jeans were actually a badge of honour, something you got from rough-housing. I'd often wear holes in the knee parts of my pants - come to think of it, I seldom wore pants as a kid, mostly shorts.
