I love acrylics but the costs and maintenance eventually would wear both my nerves and my pocketbook so I end up doing my nails on my own. I don't mind growing them out but they end up chipping or breaking off. I usually keep just a clear strengthening polish on my hands but always paint my toes. I do like manicures but every once in a while. I can't stand pedicures; the salon peeps just seem like they are about to rip your skin off with their scrubbers! Eek!

I usually wear acrylics, but tried the "gel" nails and really like them. Right now, am giving my real nails a hiatus, and trying to grow them out.

If I could, I would keep my nails around medium length but, with my job, they tend to get broken all the time so I keep em short. Still, I absolutely HAVE to have some color on them!!! Usually its some shade of dark red. I think I'm the only "truck drivin mama" with painted nails, at least from what I can see. lol.

I keep mine nicely filed with a sheer pink polish. This gel idea sounds pretty cool though, because it sounds like you don't have to do touch-ups.

For those of you who wear gel- do you wear them with tips or is this a gel that goes over your natural nail?

I had tips applied first. Then the gel over the tips. Another time, they built up the nail without any tip. They put these half moon sticky forms on my finger tips then sculpted a nail on top of it. Pretty cool stuff...

Gel nails, permanent french. My nails are really soft and never grow, despite trying vitamins, being pregnant, using Nailtiques and/or other nail treatments.

However, I'm so tired of the upkeep and can't wait to remove them after my sister's wedding in November.

I would like to just use them also for special occasions, is so harmful. Just have gotten into a vicious cycle with wearing acrylics. Now my nails so flimsy and thin, hopefully can build them back up again over time.

Default question about gels

i had tips and gels put on once and loved the way it looked, but after maintaining it for about a month, i got mold - got rid of them and never looked back.

so is it the tips coming undone and water getting trapped underneath the cause of the mold or was it the gel? i realize i probably had a crappy nail tech either way, but now i'm gun-shy.

i actually have great nails when i take care of them (very strong). i usually buff them to a shine so it looks like i have polish on, but i don't.
