Ok, I just learned in the nick of time (no pun intended) a few years ago that holiday sweaters had become a joke! Learned that right here on CD forums!

So... Question... Can you wear a top ( at least during Christmas season in the DAYTIME that has a little bling to it? Like sequins, rhinestones etc.? I'm not talking MAJOR bling, something subtle. What say you?? Again, I'm asking about daytime!

Also, while we are on the topic, any thoughts about ideas for a fifty plus lady to r wear husbands office party? Christmas dressy if you know what I mean. Thanks.

Subtlety is key here. I would recommend (for the evening) doing maybe a silvery sequined dress (like this ) with matte dark red* accessories (heels and clutch OR heels and jewelry - you don't want to overdo it). If you choose a sleeveless cocktail dress, you could even do a shawl that matches your heels and wear silver jewelry and have a clutch that matches your dress.

For the day time, I have had to do holiday attire for one of my jobs (I hate this time of year and own no christmas garb), so what I've done is black skinny jeans and boots, paired with either a red or green cardigan (my green cardigan is striped) and a t-shirt.

*I say red because it's infinitely easier to find than green

You can definitely wear a top with some sequin embellishment during the day. You could also make things more festive with some sparkly jewelry or a pin, a sequined scarf or a metallic belt. For example: Take your normal jeans, shirt, cardigan and add a slim silver belt to the mix.

As for a Christmas party I say sequins all the way! You could do a sequined shirt (more sequins than you would wear during the day) with black pants and some fun shoes.

If you are nervous about sequins being too much stick to a more neutral shade or incorporate them into accessories (bag, scarf, etc).

You can absolutely wear daytime "bling"

However, my recommendations will depend on your body shape.

Thanks for the info ladies! Good suggestions!

As for the daytime bling question~~full disclosure--I am sitting at work right now wearing a sapphire blue sweater which has just a small amount of small rhinestones sprinkled around the neck. So either I'm ok ... Or the fashion police may arrive on the scene any moment now to declare a serious fashion faux pas!

You are absolutely ok! Your sweater sounds gorgeous. I wear bling during the day and always get compliments, but I don't wear anything that I would consider too much bling.

I'm going to give the same advice I gave to the poster wanting to dress more feminine: turn to a style icon. And I have a lovely one in mind.

Emma Pillsbury of Glee

A google search will show she has a defined style of dress which typically involves a brightly colored cardigan, an adorable brooch or statement necklace, and a perfectly tailored skirts and dresses. I think a bright cardigan or festive blouse with some tasteful accent sparkle either already built in or that you add yourself is a great modern take on the old Christmas tree and reindeer sweaters.

If you happen to be a fifty plus lady with an "ageless" figure":
I would go with a modern cut dressy cashmere sweater in winter white or cream with some subtle glitter woven in. I think that fabric is called "Lurex". Match it with some winter white or cream well cut slacks and silver sandals with say a 2 inch heel coordinating hoisery. Make sure your hair is extra feminine and if you select pearls to wear, make sure they're up to date.

If you happen not to have the "ageless figure" go with a well-fitting (not too tight) sophisticated wrap dress in black, a deep red or a deep blue with three quarter length sleeves, dark sheer hoisery and some slingback pumps with say a 2 1/2 in heel or a little higher if you can stand it. Dress Barn has some good selections and so does JC Penney during the holidays for this kind of dress. Clear white lowkey crystal jewelry would be more festive than pearls, actually.

Good luck.

You can wear anything you want during the day and people do but if you are aiming to make the best dressed list then no beads or sequins before dark. It's not "appropriate".
