I disagree. I've been poor and I've been "rich" (by most standards, but I'm far from a 1%-er) and I've always used credit cards (pay the balance off each month but like the rewards) and have never shopped at thrift stores.

J Crew has gone down in quality, that's why I stopped shopping there a decade ago.

Gap started carrying clothes that were Old Navy quality and they eventually decreased the quality of the ON lines.

what brands have basic styles like gap and j crew, but have really good quality still? i like to be able to wash clothes several times and still look close to new.

I drop off at thrift stores, although I'm not opposed to the idea of shopping consignment.

I can't recall the last time I visited a mall.

Where does that leave me?

And CCs aren't necessarily evil. Gotta' love accruing AMEX points!

There's a difference in perspective, for sure, so it's possible some folks (natives or locals) do wear cashmere in warm climates - although I don't have enough experience to have seen it.

Anybody know if people ever wear cashmere, wool, or sweaters in general in LA and Southern California?
Very true about perspective. I had a grandmother from Barbados visit me one summer (80 degree weather) and put on a sweater. And she thought nothing of drinking tea year round.

Keep in mind, however, LA and SoCal is a different climate and not tropical. It is hot in the summer, but not as humid like Miami, which is subtropical.

I have to be honest, I don't really shop for basics or those stores. Maybe that's why I'm always conflicted on where to shop! LOL

I'm primarily an online shopper.

Ridiculous. I was wearing Ralph Lauren when I was barely middle-class. I bought off the sale racks at the outlets at the end of the season. Can't beat a $4 blouse--which I still have. It's a bit shopworn after almost 20 years, but it reminds me that you don't have to spend a ton of money to dress well.
