IN our supermarkets they sell clothes, and when you go to the checkout your asked if you want the plastic hanger.... now theres such a fuss over the environment and plastic bags in these shops so why give away hangers that could be recycled and used again... talk about hypocrisy..

Even if they're giving them to the customer, they're being recycled and used again. I don't see the problem.
There's nothing hypocritical about it. They're giving them to the customer under good faith that they will be recycled and reused. From that point on, it's up to the customer to do with them however they see fit.
Whose to say the stores aren't reusing them? When I worked retail we would ask if customer's wanted the hangers. If they didn't, we'd toss them in a bin that we'd later use to hang up new clothes. Hence, recycling them. What's hypocritical about that? And if a customer wants to keep it, it's probably because they too also want to actually keep using them, hence...recycling.
If you don't want the hanger - JUST SAY NO - I personally take the pants hangers w/the clips, as well as the plastic hangers w/wire hooks that have that little thing below the hook where you can thread through another hanger - saves on closet space.

When I worked in retail clothing, clothing was shipped on plastic hangers and we changed out the hangers to nice metal ones. I'm sure they still ship them on the hangers, and the seller doesn't want them because they already have enough.
When I buy clothes elsewhere, I always remove clothes from the hangers.
