Never could figure out who decided a shiny satin cami and a pair of jeans was a good look for a night out...

If it wasn't working (i.e. getting the attention of men) it wouldn't keep happening. There's your answer.

I think it can look really good on a very thin woman with a small chest. Especially the silk/lace ones, plus you can wear a nice blazer over it for work, then take the blazer off for a night out.

I really wish I could wear something like that.

I think some camisoles are designed to be worn as stand-alone shirts (or under a jacket/cardigan/etc) while others are meant to be worn as underwear. Some people confuse the two types.

I was never big on shiny-finish camis, either as a layering piece or stand-alone...In general, I think a satiny finish looks cheap, even on pieces that are quite expensive. Matte ones are valid layering pieces, IMO, and if the straps aren't excessively lingerie-like, can look okay alone as a summer top with the right skirt or pants...just depends on the piece and the fit.

Some are, indeed, designed to be summer wear. Usually the ones intended to be worn alone are of heavier fabric than the ones designed to be worn as underwear. But the line seems to be blurring.
