You have just bought into "wedding hype". Costume party, one size fits all, stuff. Kind of embarrassing but hey, whatever floats your boat.

Getting married =/= formal anything. Guests are a witness a marriage, not props, and thank goodness the OP went with his gut reaction. As a Bay Area resident myself I told him on page 1 he was going to be ok. Clean, neat, tidy. It's all situational and he knew the situation. If the invite was black tie it would have been different. I had friends who did a beach wedding, a park wedding/BBQ, a living room wedding, etc. Not everyone weds the same.

I guess not.

Since most people consider marriage the most important decision of their life, and their wedding the most important day of their life, polo and shorts seem completely inappropriate and lacking in respect for the occasion.

But I'm old fashioned.
