I'd say that it's entirely TOO common.

Common sense = 99% common, 1% sense

I love my piercings. I have four lobe piercings on each side, on the left ear I have 5 cartilage piercings, two diamond studs where my fourth lobe leaves off, then two more at the top and a forward helix. On my right I have my tragus, daith, and an industrial. I also have the right side of my nose pierced and both of my nipples pierced as well.
I typically leave them all in with diamond studs in all my ear piercings. I've never had any problems with them being active. I love wearing my hair up to reveal them all. Usually I get a lot of people staring at me due to my piercings. Most girls will come up to me and tell me how much they love my piercings while most guys tell me that they are hot or sexy. I don't plan on taking any of them out. I actually want to fill up the rim of my entire left ear and get a tragus on the left side as well as two more forward helix's to finish the triple forward helix I've been craving. I also plan on getting a conch and possibly a rook piercing. I love my piercings, they are apart of who I am. Maybe years down the road I'll take a few out but I want to heal them all completely before I do. I want permanent holes in my ears so I don't have to worry about them closing up.

Exactly. That is an ear wire. OP only needs one hole and the jewelry snakes up the earlobe to make it look as though it has multiple piercings.

a. In the future, in case I change my mind, do all these holes close up? (I am thinking about getting 7 on my left ear only)

b. For a very athletic girl like myself, would I get infections easily because of these piercings? (I do sweat a lot when I play sports)

Here is the picture, this is the look I like

Awesome Multiple Ear Piercings For Girls
Why not start with one to see how you like it? If you pierce your ears and you don't put an earring in, your ear will probably close up. I don't know if that is the way it is forever or not. But within the first year or two, you might experience closing up.

I am thinking it best to start with one because you might be allergic to metals or something. So, try one, and see what you think. That's my advice.

Then, if all goes well, proceed with a couple more.

I'd ask other athletic women about sweat and infections. They would probably be able to advise you.

I had my ears pierced (single, each ear) back in the mid 60s. I wore earrings for years, but it's been probably 30 years now since I wore them. There's no visible sign I ever had them pierced. No hole visible at all, but the hole area has a tiny bit of scar tissue that can be felt. It's been probably 15 years ago that I decided to see if the holes were still there. They were. I was able to get the stud through the hole, with effort.

I think the multiple look is beautiful, but I doubt I would ever have the guts to pierce anything but the lobe.

You only need one hole to wear "ear crawlers."

These threads about ear piercing are funny.Sagging earlobes or excessive piercings are the only things I possibly might notice.

I have 7 piercings in my left ear - done in the mid 80's during college - used to wear all diamonds - never had an infection & the top piercing is through the cartilage, pierced with the gun & didn't hurt as much as the soft tissue ones. Also had my nose pierced over ten years ago & never had any issues. My ear piercings are all still open, not all that visible and I still wear a diamond stud in the top as well as bottom. I've never put anything but 14k gold in my piercings; I love them.
