I am another who wears flip flops constantly until the weather is cold enough to force me into tennis shoes. I wear them pretty much anywhere I feel comfortable doing so and for other places I have sandals that meet the occasion. Oh, and I am almost 54 and have never had foot issues. We went to Six Flags this summer and I wore a pair of Croc flip flops that kept my feet from aching even after being there for almost 10 hours. Everyone in tennis shoes was miserable. :-)
Original flip flops are of the cheap rubber variety in solid colors with the thong between the toes and have little to no support. The intention was for something easy to put on and take off for summer wear, especially to pools/lakes etc. When I was a kid we actually called them thongs. haha
Today, flip flops encompass all types of materials, structures, brands and prices. Anything that doesn't go between the toes is typically referred to as sandals.
In both categories, flip flops and sandals, the variety available is huge. Various ones are perfectly acceptable for wearing to school, work, church or for play. Some are more supportive than many enclosed shoes, others have zero support. Some are noisy and some are not. Some people cannot walk safely in them while other can run like the wind.
Basically these days you cannot simply say flip flops are unsafe and ugly when there is such a variance among them.
ETA, out of my 4 kids, 1 wears them like I do, 1 wears them frequently but prefers tennis shoes and the younger two only wear them to the water park. They have banned them from being worn to school, so the occasions of them wearing anything but tennis shoes is narrowed to personal time.
I cannot stand flip flops. No way did my kids go to school or church, or anywhere nice with flip flops. It was not a battle...I just choose to never buy flip flops for my kids. Problem solved.

Don't forget that kids' feet keep growing and need good support. There's none in this kind of footwear. And it's easy to twist an ankle when running, jumping etc... These are things that children do a lot.
So yes, parents must choose their battles, but the one about flip flops (and I do mean flip flops, not sandals) is not a bad one IMO.

I wear flip flops year round here in florida. I dont own any shoes except 1 pair of flip flops and 1 pair of vibrams. (yes, I am a woman and i own 2 pairs of shoes).
I have no clue what vibrams are, but I do know flip flops.
I own a pair of flip flops, a pair of sneakers, a nice pair of ankle leather boots (that were given as a gift for winter wear, but they get wet too quickly) and an ugly pair of calf high winter boots (that I might need to wear a hand full of times each winter) and that is it.
I go barefoot at home, and wear socks or homemade (knitted) slippers for warmth. It's not unusual to see me walking down the road wearing socks or slippers... I just hate wearing shoes.
If my feet are nekkid and I am going out, I just slip on those flip flops and away I go.
A little soap and water each night and my feet are good to go.

Vibrams are the "barefoot" shoes that look like toe socks kinda shoe Its basically like walking barefoot with a little bit of strategic extra cushinioning - its made for running.

Tennis shoes are the worst to wear to amusement parks. You'll end up going on at least one water ride, and then your shoes and socks will be wet the rest of the day. Even if its not a wide where you get wet, there all ways seems to be a couple inches of water at the bottom of the ride that gets into your shoes. With sandles you're feet will be dry in a matter of minutes.

We called them zories.
Parents would say things like, "Put on your zories. You can't go to the store barefoot."

I read it. Bare feet are fine for kids, it does help their muscles etc. but flip flops can slip, get stuck etc... Not good for kiddos and adults alike!
What are you going to say to her when she says she can't find them and asks if you know where they are?
Nothing, mom will just buy her a new pair is likely
