Hmmm the ten i have in my closet look symmetrical to me. Even though the outer layer crosses your belly centerline, so does the inner by the same amount.

I think what he means is that double-breasted suits, when worn unbutonned, tend to gather under the arms and look a bit sloppy. Some double-breasted jackets, like morning coats, are cut to be worn unbuttoned and show off the vest underneath, but a typical double-breasted suit has too much fabric for this to look good on most men.
