It's time to freak out!!!

Christmas office party function coming up relatively soon, you guessd it!

What to wear!?!?!?

I went shopping/browsing last night for a bit, I clean up nice! dayyum!! I tried on this black floor length gown, with a halter-style rouche (sp?) at the top... all black and whispy material, was so pretty. and tight! but slimming... as long as I don't eat while I'm wearing it... or for several days beforehand, I should be fine... hahaha.

I'm just not prepared to share that much cleavage in one night, with people I have to continue to work with on a daily basis afterwards! LOL Know what I mean?

My issue is this... this is a formal Christmas function. All the formal dresses and gowns I was looking at that are evening style, are all strapless, or spaghetti straps... how does one stay warm? Obviously a coat or cape while outside, but is it the normal thing to do now, to wear such little on top inside no matter what time of year it is? It's been a few years since I've had to "put on the dog", so I'm asking for all kinds of help!

I don't want to have to buy some $300.00 gown just for one night. I think I'll cry! But I'm tickled pink, I want to go to this thing. It's not everyday your company buys out the entire hotel and ballroom for the evening-to-morning.

Any suggestions on where to shop? what to expect? is this one of those "wear pantyhose or DIE" kind of nights? I think I'll die

PS: I'm no size two here.. any places in the mall that sell the really attractive gowns, are always catering to the teeny weeny ones. Think 10-12.

Please help?

I would start out browsing on Ebay. There are so many styles to choose from. I've found quite a few designer outfits there I would never have been willing to pay full price for. Once you know your size, it's easy. Ebay lets you look at the world sort of. Not just the few choices offered by local merchants. Even if you don't buy, you can get great ideas.

Deal with good vendors and you will get exactly what you are paying for!

Definately ebay - most are worn only once before being sold - also - evening tuxedo type outfts (for women) with a longer jacket and chemise undertop (is that a word??) are VERY chi chi now and look great in your size - they also allow for only kneehighs and a walkable shoe.

I will do some searching and see what i find

Oh and a nice cashmere pashmina will keep you quite warm. You can get a deal on those too. Outrageous in the stores. Cheap on Ebay.

I'm really hesitant to buy anything off of Ebay that I can't try on first.. after going through about 7 gowns last night, I realized just like with jeans... different designers, different styles, different fabrics, gah! some fit, some don't, some look ridiculous, some look amazing... I've been browsing Ebay just so I can see at a glance a lot of different styles, but I'm really thinking I'd lose my nerve and just end up not going period, rather than order something and risk it online.

Take your measurements and the measurements of a gown that fits you well. If you see something perfect, ask the seller to post the measurements of their gown. Most do this anyway. It takes a lot of the guesswork out of it.

Shopping for formal occasions is fun and we don't get to do it that often. Think of it as a challenge. Don't give up and you will have fun and look amazing!

Purple or Black - both could be dressed up with jewelry and the right shoes:

NORDstroms!! I will kidnap my mother and we will go there this weekend, I hadn't thought of that.

I'm trying to go more for the floor length gown type, than the business pants-suit look, Grason, but I LOVE the purple one in that link.
