Cashmere Socks? (light, fashion, look, cheapest)

So...I’m already thinking of holiday gifts – and I do like to get things for people they wouldn’t get for themselves. Price is not really an issue as long as I think “the ah-ha look on their face“ is worth it.

So this year I’m thinking of cashmere socks. I THINK I’ll end up NOT getting them but thought I’d ask on this thread and get opinions of people much more fashion savvy than I.

Would you pay this kind of money (below) for cashmere socks?

Now these prices may be cheap for some people. But I usually get the cheapest socks I can find at big box discount stores. So 20.00 or more for ONE pair of socks seems CRAZY!...But it would be a gift, so I COULD see my way to put price aside....maybe...

-- 33% virgin wool, 30% nylon, 23% viscose, 8% cashmere, 6% angora crew sock 20.00 – knee-hi socks 25.00 a pair.
-- 33 nylon, 31% virgin wool, 22% viscose, 8% cashmere, 6% angora fiber $16.50 a pair
-- 100% cashmere for 35.00 a pair (knee-hi) -- crew socks 30.00.

PART of the reason I hesitate to pay so much for socks is that pretty much all socks get holes in the heels (or toes) right? So the ‘finer’ the material the faster they’ll wear out. Right?

I can handle replacing socks that were 1.00 or even 3 for $5.00, or $2.00 a pair – but 20.00 or more...I don’t know.

My friends won’t think “oooh, they’re great” ...they’ll think, “are your crazy?”

I wouldn't buy cashmere socks. But I would consider a casmere scarf as an affordable gift to close family members.

I know I said that for gifts I'm willing to go above my own personal price point. But I am trying to keep it below 50.00 a person. I saw scarves but they're more money than the socks. And with the scarf I'd be more concerned about getting the right color. Although I could get a gift receipt.

Cashmere socks are great, but I think any time you buy someone socks it screams boring and impersonal. Plus with you run the risk of looking cheap because people don't appreciate/get that it's a really nice pair of socks.

You can find cashmere scarfs for under $50 especially at Thanksgiving or probably on Veterans day when stores generally have sales if you want to shop early.

Cashmere socks are one of life's little luxuries, but I'd probably add a note that they should be worn as a "house sock" rather than be shoved into a shoe and ruined.

Thats what I was thinking too. I don't think you would get the "ah-ha" look that you are going for. You'll get more of a fake "Oh! Socks!"

Oh, my friends would know cashmere is a treat, and appreciate it. But also think I'm crazy.
Because for them it's more like, "It's one of those things they'd love, but never spend the money on them" kind of thing.
Which of course, is in part, why I WOULD get it for them.

I just have to decide IF I AM going to do it! Because it's kind of crazy to me too

I would really appreciate getting a pair of cashmere socks, preferably trouser socks I'd wear with loafers/boots (not "house socks"). You would get an "ah-ha" moment from me. In fact, I often get cashmere socks as gifts from family (they know I love them and don't often splurge on myself).

But I'm a little over-the-top about socks. And I really love cashmere - so soft, warm, long-wearing, durable, non-pilling, lightweight, and non bulky - worth every penny! Every sweater I own is cashmere.

And my family also loves socks. $25+ ski socks, $25+ basketball socks (cotton, not even cashmere!) are always on the top of their gift lists. I say cashmere socks are an awesome gift - but I may not be representative of the general population on this one...

p.s. I'd spend the extra $5-$10 and go for the 100% cashmere.

Regarding the wear factor - cashmere by itself is a more fragile fiber, partly because it's so fine. The socks you noted above that have mixed fibers will wear better. Nylon is a hard-wearing fiber, and so are many wools. The angora & cashmere will be more delicate.

My cashmere socks (several years old) are a blend with nylon and something else I've forgotten. They are still whole. I got them on a Christmas clearance for $2 or $3.

I LOVE cashmere socks. Every year, I get a few pair at Christmas, and they're one of my go-to gift ideas when I've budgeted $25 or less for someone.

I'd be thrilled to receive a pair. I love the idea of giving people affordable luxury, especially when it's something they probably wouldn't buy for themselves.
