I have tried all the supposedly great stuff like OPI for strengthening nails nothing works. I hate nail salons no germs here.

I need a method to get my nails really long & strong esp right hand!

As of now its like I need a soft gel!

Have tried OPI

Sally Hansen, works when nails are itty bitty short then they break!

Have you had a physical with accompanying blood work? All those chemicals that you are putting on your nails are not the answer. Nails are a marker of overall health just like teeth are.

Try Biotin. My nails used to split and break. Since taking biotin my nails are now harder and grow nicely. It will take 4 to 6 weeks to see a difference but it does work. You can buy it in Wal Mart in the vitamin isle

All true. Healthy nails are from the inside out. Nothing you put on them will make them healthy if your body isn't getting what they need.

There you go!
I completely agree. Take care of the inside and the nails will follow.

My nails naturally grow strong, probably because I avoid putting them in contact with too much water. I really don't put any chemicals on them- well, except nail polish sometimes.

I would say avoid the water.

Very few things are worse for your nails than nail polish.

What do you do for a living and how do you generally use your hands? People use their nails for all kinds of things they don't realize and have all kinds of unconscious habits they do with their nails.

As others have said, nails grow from the inside. You need the right nutrients, proteins, and calories, yes, calories.

How short are your nails? Are they splitting, chipping, or breaking? Horizontally or vertically? Why did you say, "especially the right hand?"

Add to the diet -- a good moisturizer. I have the worst nails in the world and they split and rip easily because they are so weak -- and flat and broad, so I have to file the sides exactly like you're not supposed to (weakens them further). And it's genetic -- I have my dad's nails -- no amount of eating right or vitamins will change my nails into strong thick beauties.

Add to that -- I do dishes by hand and own and operate a janitorial company, so my hands are in water and soap A LOT -- my nails are also my scraper sometimes. I don't like gloves -- they limit my feeling if a surface is clean. And I don't have time to pussyfoot around -- I just want this stuff done, so I can go on to the next project.

So I cream my hands a lot -- love Curel Ultra Healing and have tubes of it all over, but what really helped was Barielle nail cream. Rub a wee bit into the nails at bedtime and into the cuticle so you treat the nail bed and your nails will get better. Mine did -- I still don't have strong nails, but they have stopped ripping and splitting -- they can take what I dish out.

IN fact -- I just had to cut my nails AGAIN today -- they had reached the point where they were way too long to deal with anymore, and I don't have time to file them down. I cut them and shaped them -- I haven't had a broken nail in about 6 months.

I have always had very healthy good nails. Almost a year ago, I painted my kitchen and used my left thumbnail a lot to scratch little drips on paint off my quartz counter. I split the tip of my thumbnail doing this, and now it is still splitting. I have tried all kinds of Hard as Nails type stuff, so that is why I know it does not work. The nail still appears very healthy otherwise, but even when I keep it cut short, it still splits.

I talked to the nice Vietnamese lady who is at the salon where I get Pedi's, and she said I can try an acrylic nail on the thumb and maybe that will hold it firm enough for long enough so that it will stop splitting.

I don't know if this would help you or not, since I know that acrylics in general weaken the nail underneath.
