Why are these sunglasses so expensive?
I tried a few $300-$500 pairs on and really couldnt see the reason for such a high price.
The sales person said it was all about quality..really?To me a $50 pair seemed just as good.
I've enjoyed all of the Oakleys I have owned. The lenses have saved my eyes time and time again. They stay on my head perfectly as well. I had a couple pair of Maui Jims and one broke and the other I could never make them stay on, no matter what I did. The slightest lean forward would send them to the floor. Ray Bans just never appealed to me. Never been a fan of them for one reason or another. Call it personal taste.
The last pair of Oakleys I bought were right at $200 out the door. I got the black polarized Flak Jackets this past summer after another similar pair were stolen or lost.

Look up Luxottica. They own both (as well as a number of other premier brands). I think it was actually on CD that someone posted a 60 min segment on the company. It's essentially a monopoly where they own the entire supply chain. So I'm gonna guess that has something to do with it.
But in general, you can also ask about the lens construction. e.g. colored coatings/polarization can add to the price.

Yep I saw the 60 min segment on Luxxottica and they basically have a monopoly as stated they own all brands now it seems.
I am not sure, big name brand to the next, which are better overall. However, compared to the department store glasses, the name brand frames tend to hold up to abuse much better (in my experience) and the lenses are a lot better (clearer).
I don't have the best vision (far from it) so I do the best I can to protect my eyes. Oakley sunglasses are a godsend. I buy them for the polarized lenses. The glasses are durable and go at least 5/6 years.
I run and cycle with them too, great for that purpose.
Sure they are more expensive than gas station glasses, but they are 14312224123x higher quality.

I have never personally seen a pair of Ray Bans that cost over $350, and certainly never $500. The average price here in Canada is between $100 and $300, depending on where they are purchased and if they are polarized or not.
As for why they cost so much, it is because of the quality of the optics. I used to think just like you until I bought a decent pair of Ray Bans. Now, I could never go back to wearing cheap sunglasses. There really is no comparison between the two.
