It seems like this has become a very acceptable practice. I remember years ago, men entered buildings and immediately removed their hats. Not so much anymore. Seems like society has become ultra casual in this regard.

When I see guys wearing hats inside, even today, it looks odd. BTW, I'm 39y/o....so I'm not that old.

I'm wearing a hat inside right now...of course I'm also wearing a heavy winter jacket because the company I work for is too cheap to turn the heat on.

Regardless, I do find it odd when people wear hats inside, men or women.

That’s a huge pet peeve. What really bothers me is when men eat with a hat on. Very vulgar.

I'm not that old yet either (36) and it bugs me too. "It" being the wearing of hats in restaurants, private residences, the office, and so on. When "inside" means an airport or train station, the lobby of an office building, Home Depot or a grocery stare, and such, that's fine.

But, yeah... especially restaurants.

It isn't that society has become more tolerant, it's that young men have become dumber, and by young I'm including some 40/50 year olds too.

I do not see why anyone cars. I do not wear hats at all, but if someone wears one inside or eating, I do not see how that impacts the world.

No one can show why wearing a hat inside is so bad, at least not with an argument more legitimate than why women should not wear pants.

Removing your hat in places like a home or restaurant is a gesture of respect. There are scores of similar gestures in everyday life, from shaking hands to saying "gesundheit!" when someone sneezes, to waving hello/goodbye, to saying "hello" to a passing stranger. You may not feel one or more such gestures "impacts the world", however they do, simply because they carry symbolic weight.

I find it worse when people wear indoor sunglasses.

Tell me, how is it a sign of respect? What objective fact do you have that a person is more or less respectful by removing a hat inside? If it carried such symbolic weight, there would not even be a discussion, but fact is, enough people feel it does not mean jack squat. Just like many other clothing issues in the past that raised controversy, but now is the norm.

It is called etiquette.
