My job requires me to be outside this summer, and also requires long sleeved shirts. Do any of you know good fabrics/brands that are best in a hot and humid climate? If your answer is "who cares, wear short sleeves" you will be ignored.
Any fabric or type of shirt I should avoid?? These shirts are also button down, I should mention.
Cotton or linen with a loose weave, and lightweight.
A loosely woven fabric will allow air to flow through.
Any fabric with a tight weave will lock heat in and make you hot and sweaty. Avoid silk; the weave is too tight, unless it's very sheer--which would be inappropriate for work.
L.L. Bean has some lightweight long sleeve shirts that are also advertised as having UV protection, so if you need to be outside all day in the summer they might be a good choice.
linen or chambray are great. Any other lightweight cotton shirt is great this time of year as well. I still wear a lot of long-sleeves (with the sleeves rolled up close to my elbows on my forearm) this time of year and just go without an undershirt.
The one thing to remember with these light-weight shirts: if you are going to be in a lot of direct sun all day, put sunscreen on even underneath your shirt! Your skin is still going to get a lot of sun-exposure through this lightweight shirts. not necessarily burned depending on your susceptibility to that but still not good to do over and over.
