Hi I'm a girl on a budget but I really, really want a decent handbag.

I'm sick of the 'fall apart" types and I hope to invest in one or two that will last forever.

I plan a trip o/s to get a really good black handbag, but in the meantime it's winter down here and I'm in desperate need of anything that's not falling apart.

I like purple, so I've decided today's the day.

My local store has a massive special on.

I can EITHER buy a Guess handbag for half the usual price, OR a Steve Madden for $25 less than the Guess.

The Steve Madden is big and a really great purple, the Guess will hold its value if I chose to sell it in a couple of years.

What would you do?

The Guess bag. I'm thinking it will have a style that will last longer and there's also the resale value.

Guess has almost no resale value im sorry to say. If you have a Coach outlet near you go for that instead, you can at least ebay it later. Im a regular e bayer, i know what sells and what doesnt. Another option is checking out e bay yourself and getting a much more expensive bag gently used for a reasonable price. things like steve madden and most of the guess these days arent even real leather and are all made in China

You should check TJ Maxx for discounted, name-brand bags.

Sounds like you are "down under", do they even have the stores being suggested? Regardless, you should probably get what you like without worrying too much about resale value. If you love it, you'll probably keep it for a long time. I've personally had my original Coach bags for ages, the leather ones, not the trendy ones. Have fun shopping!

If I wanted a forever bag, I'd probably go to my local saddle maker and have him tool one up for me. Bespoke and durable, it would also be a lot less expensive than those off the shelf things.

Otherwise, try a thrift shop or Craig's List, Kijiji or whatever your local online classifieds are. No need to pay retail for something that is outlandishly expensive to begin with.

Ack.

Thanks for the advice, the bags are still on sale and I'm still confused.

Guess does resell online here. I'm in Australia and Guess bags are very popular so anyone who wants to sell one, list it on ebay Australia you will be amazed how much folks pay.

Steve Madden? Not so much. It's just not as well known.

I will be buying a forever bag overseas when I travel.

A little known fact - Australia has brutal tax on "luxury" goods which includes makeup and imported handbags.
