My brother had to shave off his very heavy beard to have a small growth removed from his face. he was to meet his wife of a decade -- who had never seen him cleanshaven -- afterwards at a nearby mall for lunch together. She walked right by him.

I went to high school with a girl who had short curly dark hair and a nose with a big bump in it. Years later, I was perusing the alumni Facebook site and I kept seeing posts ostensibly from this classmate referring to her son graduating or whatever. But, I could never find a picture of the former classmate--just the son and some woman with long, straight blonde hair that I figured was a daughter or something. Finally I realized the blonde must be her! Totally changed her hair and had major nose reconstruction.

When I was a child (9 years old), I got glasses over the summer, and cut my hair from butt-length to a pixie, and when I started fourth grade in the fall, people thought I was a new student. It was traumatizing.

but this was in high school. Eventually people got used to it and when I did wear makeup they asked why or assumed I must have been interested in a boy
Hah, I don't wear a lot of makeup, but I have light blonde lashes, and if I skip mascara, I get a lot of, "You look like you don't feel well/you look tired" comments. Uh, thanks?

You also start taking care of and revealing skin on becoming more confident with your body, and people get to see body parts they may have never seen before. A year ago, I was very ashamed on showing off my arms when they were flabby, even for running on trails

After building muscle tone upon my arms, I finally got the confidence to reveal them. One fine day in May after graduation, my cousin sister was shocked when I wore a sleeveless T shirt outdoors for trail running. She started commenting "your arms and shoulders are almost perfect, you should wear this more often". Little did she know that biceps & triceps were being built under the hood for 1 year .

Many have gone through the same. I know this girl in my school who claimed that she was extremely religious and would never wear tank/crop tops with skinny jeans. Exactly 2 years later, she wore a sparkly red tank with skinny jeans to the farewell party. I never expected her to wear such an outfit, and was shocked at how pretty her body looked. People can make drastic changes in clothing choices over short periods of time, and sometimes decide to flaunt or conceal more.
