I tend to buy from proven retailers, like Zappos, Lands End and LL Bean. I have bought innumerable shoes from Zappos in the last decade. They have a fabulous no cost shipping policy, a liberal return policy and they have a better selection than any local show retailer anywhere.

Lands End things are less well made than before, but I buy knits from them, and I like anything Bean makes as long as it fits. I've bought many coats from both places, but I usually like Bean coats the best. I do have to pay return shipping though. But they often have better things for me than any local retailer.

I will try a new retailer from time to time. I hate paying return shipping costs though! That's the big holdup for me.

I can buy pretty much everything online. But they should have measurement included in the description.

Pants.

I used to get cheap Miss Sixty jeans on Ebay and every second pair fit. Every different model of their jeans was different in sizes so some fit and some didn't and it was very weird.

So in the end (since I couldn't return any) and I got stuck with all the pants that didn't fit - so it didn't save me a dime. Could have just bought them in the store.

Second/third/fourthing shoes....I've bought pretty much everything else with no issues (though I haven't bought clothes from Amazon, I generally also buy from stores with brick-and-mortars and / or sealtight return policies), have only had to make a return once. And actually I will be even more specific - dress shoes/heels. I think athletic shoes would be fine - I only buy one brand anyway and my size hasn't changed in a while now :-) and flats I think would be ok. But not dressy/high-heeled shoes, it's best to try those on at the store I think, since I'd hate ordering and then having to wait another 2-3 days or more for them to be returned and another pair sent to me.

Jeans unless I'm familiar with the brand and know it'll fit.
