Working in NYC, I see a lot of gay people on the street and at the workplace.
What I've noticed over the years is that in general, gay men are better dressed than lesbian women. Some lesbians looks simply awkward. When a Lesbian woman tries to dress very masculine they have the wrong combination usually. Quite a few Lesbian women have the Eddie Munster haircut, big frame glasses, straight legged and baggy pants. Some always wear blazers with shoulder pads to appear wider frame like a man.
A lot of feminine gay men are some of the best dressed men I've ever seen. They not only look sharp but glamorous at the same time.
But there are butch lesbians like you described and there are lipstick lesbians who can be very feminine and well dressed. I agree that most butch lesbians I've seen are dressed horribly.
As a gay man, I'm very awkward in the fashion department. I don't dress to impress and I would usually wear plain plaid shirts or hoodies (not that I'm into the hip hop/gangsta subculture).
Some feminine gay men tend to overdress and it makes them look unattractive. A man doesn't have to look like a peacock to attract another man (or even a woman), not unless if he's a drag queen or trans attracting straight men (?).
IMO, a good sense of fashion isn't being overly 'glamorous'. It's just too tacky for the eyes. Butch lesbians at least try to keep their look plain and ordinary - why should we have a problem with that?
Oh, a more fairer question would be if gay men are better dressed than straight men? I think the former wins here.

I didn't realize they started requiring all gay people to get branded on their forehead! Yay! At least now we'll be able to tell who's gay and who isn't!!
Not all lesbians are butch. Not all gay men are feminine. Some are well dressed, others are not. Same can be said for straight people. This thread is so wrong and ridiculous on so many levels.

Exactly, so the OP probably is seeing gay men who are not well-dressed (and lesbians who are) all the time, he just doesn't assume that they're gay by the way they're dressed, if that makes sense.
Yes, in many ways gay men and (butch) lesbians are polar opposites.
It's a long story but i ended up spending an evening in a mostly lesbian bar back in 1995. It was quite an education. The fem lesbians were dressed up as nice as can be, they were some of the prettiest girls i have ever seen. The butch were dressed for comfort period. What surprised me is they did not pair off together...they hung out in their own groups and didn't seem to especially like each other. The butch were quite friendly towards me, yet they didn't talk to the fem girls.
I don't know many lesbians but as for gay make friends, it is 50/50. Or maybe less well dressed guys. That is just a stereotype. Most of the butch lesbians I have met dress horrible. But the other day I did chat with one butch girl at a bar who had super cute accessories. She was super stylish. I met another girl the other day who was pretty stylin in a b-girl way.
I think this stereotype is very true, to the point that some softer dykes even look like hell.
If the t-shirt was outlawed I think most of the lesbians I know would need a completely new wardrobe..and I use that term quite loosely.
Come to think of it, there is a real dearth of nice jewelry in most gay women's dress-wear.
Not sure if it's money or taste, but then again, what earrings really go well with sport Tees??
Obviously gay men since gay men are like straight men and like their men to look sexy, same as straight men like their women to look sexy. There are slob gay guys but gays have a pressure to look more made up than their straight counterparts. Really glamourous lesbians are few and far between since its just between the women.
