It is isn't it and it just dawned on me, the guy that I had (sort of still do,) a crush on after my previous boyfriend his name is Mike. I hadn't even given it any thought because one I never referred to as Mike it was always Michael. I'm not sure what it is about the Michaels I've encountered, but there seems to be some sort of a pattern that has drawn me to quite a few of them. Though there is this one Mike, that is a friend, but, there's not even a slight bit of appeal there. Have to say, the love of my life was not a Michael, he was a Daryl, but, I'm imagine in time a Michael could have taken that spot if it were meant to be.
Although I love the name I haven't dated any guy named Michael.I know two childhood friends,an uncle, and my mom's friend's son.
Is it true that some of those ghetto inspired names were proposed so the couple could remember where the child was conceived? I think I've seen a couple little girls named "La Kaymarta: and La Walmarta"
Just as it's very common to "shorten" given names, it's just as common to believe those "shortened" names have a "full" name behind them. I think it's just instinctive to think that which is probably why you get grief over it. It may be a generational thing too. In my youth (1950s) if there were a Patty or a Cindy in my classroom you could be assured they were really Patricia and Cynthia. Not so much anymore.
But would you ARGUE with Patti or Cindy if they corrected you, and said, "Actually, it's just Patti (or Cindy), not Patricia (or Cynthia)? Unfathomably, people have actually debated it with me when I've told them, "Actually, it's just [name]."
Was in Costco recently and the clerk's name tag read "Amoreena," which I recognized as an Elton John song from 1970. I started to mention something, and her wincing acknowledgement of her name's origin made me stop commenting immediately. Poor thing.
In the 90s I worked w a Layla. Almost daily she would get, "so your parents big Clapton fans?" It was annoying to me so I can only imagine how her life has been being asked this almost daily! !

i have always loved porn star names such as ashlynn gere or kayden kross. these aren't even puns but cutesy sounding names that i like. freakonomics said it best. if you have a ghetto thug name like dayquan or tyrone, you are less likely to be called back for a job based on resumes. i personally prefer using last names with people. i am not your friend and would rather keep it professional.
Even some White names are thought of as Black in certain parts of the US. Like, if someone's name is Leroy Johnson, Midwesterners and East Coasters will automatically think of a Black guy. Southerners however will probably know a White guy named Leroy Johnson.
A friend of mine was dating a guy named Jeremiah Johnson. We're all in our 30s so we didn't know the movie reference until someone else told us, but before we met him we thought he would be a Black guy. Turns out he was Swedish American.
