In a couple of weeks I am going to a barbecue. If it were a bbq with my friends, I'd throw on a pair of jeans and a t-shirt or sweater. But this is with a new friend, going to his work-friends' home. I don't know these people whatsoever but I've got the impression it's a bunch of white, middle age professionals with too much money who like to show off, and I don't want to show up looking like a derelict to them.

I'm thinking something preppy-casual but that's not my normal style. Normally I dress pretty girly, and if it matters, I'm a petite small/medium. Any suggestions? Photos, suggestions of stores or specific outfits welcome!

Why not ask the new friend? He should be able to tell you what would be appropriate.

Maxi dress with cardigin sounds good. Check the forecast though. St Louis weather varies like crazy in late September and it can be nippy or balmy.

Not sure, but how about dress as if you're going out to eat with him anywhere? BBQ is casual but that doesn't mean sloppy. I know my guy HATES when I ask his opinion about what to wear. You know what looks good on you. Wear that, but you want to be comfortable. If you like him and these are his friends, PLEASE be comfortable, be yourself and don't be judgemental about people you haven't met yet. Bring something. A deck candle? plant? birdseed?

Young texas ladies, wear summer dress with cowboy boots for casual events such as BBQ, out door concerts,
Or just hanging out.

I think that's cute, sexy and appropriate.

Great ideas, maxi dress + cardigan sounds perfect! And I have boots that will go perfectly with. Thanks!

Or flip-flops with the dress. That's how I used to dress growing up in Texas at casual events. Either way is good (boots or flip-flops).

A summer dress & cardigan sweater with it. With matching flip-flops or 1 inch heels. Not too dressy though.
