And by that, I don't mean he has to dress in tailored suits and highly polished shoes (though that SURE is nice to see occasionally). A man can be dignified and handsome in a clean, well-fitting pair of jeans and nice shirt and casual but decent-looking shoes. Or in nothing at all.

I agree about how men looked in the 50s and 60s. Maybe that's one of the reasons why I enjoy the series Mad Men. It's such a visual treat to look at those men. Men who look like men and not (overgrown) 12-year-old boys constantly.

Here are some men who are/were not only very good-looking, but who also have those essential qualities that make them "handsome" :

From the 1950s/60s, when they were in their prime (30s and 40s):
Gregory Peck
Marlon Brando
James Garner
Paul Newman
Sean Connery
Rock Hudson
Gene Kelly

Today:
Greg Kinnear (agreed)
George Clooney
Brad Pitt
Christian Bale
Sanjay Gupta
Denzel Washington
Gerard Butler
Nathan Fillion
Hugh Jackman
Jon Hamm
Charles Barkley
Prince Harry (oh, my!)
President Obama
No mention of Alain Delon or Robert Redford?

When Robert Redford was younger, yes he was handsome. I confess I had to google Alain Delon, and yes, he was handsome as a younger man, too.

BTW, I am significantly older than you, yes. But please do not refer to me as an "older" woman.

To me, an "older" woman is someone my mom's age (71).

I've noticed the way a guy dresses can put him into the "handsome" category to some females' opinions. I've only been called "cute" by females when I was in casual clothes, and I've only been called "handsome" the rare times I was in formal clothes, i.e. suits and dressy shoes.

Evidently, maturity & masculinity aren't always features that females take into account in deciding whether a guy is "handsome" or I wouldn't have been called that as I haven't ever looked very masculine nor mature (yet).

Well, I supposedly look cute no matter what I wear.

I have not been called "sexy" as of yet, but that's because I'm yet to expose myself naked as an adult to women who won my heart.

Alain delon was sensually gorgeous. You must watch Plein Soliel(based on Patricia Highsmith's Tom Ripley series). He was the first Ripley before John Malkovich and Matt Damon. Also check out Le Samourai.

I agree with you IF we're talking about his character in the Lord of the Rings trilogy with his darker hair.

I don't think I'd ever seen him before the first installment of the trilogy, and when I first saw him, I thought, WHO is HE? Wow! I couldn't take my eyes off of him.

But for some reason, in other movies I've seen him in, I don't find him quite as handsome.

A handsome guy, may also be a cute guy. A cute guy is attractive, but not necessarily handsome.
A beautiful girl can also be cute, but a cute girl may, or may not be beautiful.

My take on Womanese:

Cute = I take him shopping with me
Handsome = I can take him out to formal events and family gatherings
Hot = I can take him back to my bed

Remember, in any species its always the male that initiates intercourse. So women won't take a man back to bed. Rather, men choose the right women to take to bed.

So the "hot" definition DOES NOT EXIST for men. Its unique for women.
