The Pedgagogy of the Oppressed states that its human nature for the oppressed to become the oppressors. It states that in order to reach true humanitarianism, we must strive for equal rights for all not just for the oppressed. This "Skinny Shaming" article shines some light into that struggle. We go from Fat Shaming to Skinny Shaming. In my opinion the latter of the two is worse since there is an actual health issue with being overweight, particularly when obese like a majority of those who are discriminated against.
Jessxwrites89,
I think you might be overthinking this (with the utmost respect intended from me). She's 20, and if you haven't noticed, kids under 21 (yes big generalization by me) can be AWFUL to each other. More kids should write songs about being who they are and sticking up for themselves IMO. You're right about the oppressed, and it's weird to see the old oppressive majorities whining about how THEY are now under attack, and culture is definitely getting flipped on it's head, but also know that the MTV and Top 40 of 20 years ago would never give anything a chance that was different, so this is a good thing.
Again, no disrespect at all, but you sort of pre-emptively apologized for your weight several times in this thread, and you should NOT have to. That's all Meghan means.
Oh, I didn't realize she was that young! I just found these articles while I was searching this song. As I said, this song is hugely popular at the library I work for and I just found out my dad loves the song. I was curious. I was an English major and we always studied these hidden meanings... so I wanted to discuss this song.
I live very close to a modeling studio, and get to see some really good looking girls. Curvy, yet well built. I am not really fond of women that look ghastly thin. The definition of Well built can vary, but in my scale for the general Population of women (outside of athletes), a BMI between 20 and 27 and body fat % in the same neighborhood is acceptable.

Yeah she looks like she's in her 30s honestly, though not in a bad way - she just looks mature.

I don't think there are any hidden messages in the song. Its just supposed to be a catchy pop song.
Quote:
“They say the song is about putting skinny girls down or that girls need guys’ approval, but I just wrote a little three-minute pop song about how I felt about my body,” says Trainor. “I just write the way I talk, and I write about things I’ve experienced.”
if you listen to the entire song, she starts out talking about how the magazines 'photoshop" girls to look that way. She's not shaming skinny girls, she's shaming the fashion and entertainment (and yes news media) for pushing an unrealistic body image. It's all about the images that are being fed to girls and women, to the point where they find that most girls around 9 are already unhappy with their bodies, and want to diet (based on the manipulated images they see.)
Two words: thigh gap.
The song is taking on the image that is put forth, like the victoria's secret models who are already underweight and siliconed, but then photoshopped. Eating disorder professionals have found that the VS models, as presented, are 15% under what would be considered an eating disorder body. That is what the song is about, not saying that if you're skinny, you're terrible. She's calling out men who look at those false images, and believe it's a realistic look.. Just yesterday, I saw an overweight guy with a "no fat chicks" sticker on his pick up truck. Those guys..
I see it as a catchy pop song that has an empowering message in regards to one's looks, that people
Should not buy into the media's definition of beauty. I don't see it as insulting us skinny people.
Meghan Trainor is like Adele, in that they won't allow their size to define them and get in the way of success.
