When I was very young I was fascinated with the idea of the Cloak for a long while.
I saw a silly musical/comedy skit in the 1970's on TV, set in Medieval times where the people were dressed in a basic one-piece brown cloak. Men and women both. Kind of like what you might have seen in Star Wars, worn by Alec Guiness. I imagined that people in medieval religious communities might have worn them.
But it was the idea of everyone, male and female, wearing the same exact garment. (Main garment rather than the outerwear. A "pullover".) The brown cloak. It just fascinated me for some reason that I have never understood.
Does anyone know what I mean? What was going on in my mind?
I think you are asking about tunics. A cloak is an outer garment. Men typically wore trousers under their tunics. Tunics were simple and easy to make with the technology at hand.
Yes, cloak is more akin to cape, in my mind. What you are describing (I think) is more robe/tunic, such as worn by monastics. Variants on simple tunic styling exist in many cultures.
