This has been around longer than social media. I can remember my mother going to cocktail parties back in the 60's and 70's and having to have a new dress each time because being seen in the same dress again was taboo.
It also happened to me at Officers mess cocktail parties and dinners always a black dress but never the same one twice.
Nowadays I don't care and thank goodness it gets expensive after a while.
The young lady in question might find Lessons from Madame Chic an enlightening read. It may not change her spendy ways...but it might open her eyes to the concepts of cost-per-wear and capsule wardrobes.
On the other hand, these are not exactly fascinating ideas to a 23-year old.
I am not here to judge her. It is her life and her money. I don't do this, because I don't want to, and because I don't post myself on FB or anywhere else for everyone to notice how I am dressed. But if she wants to do it, she is free to. Her behavior doesn't affect me.
I'd agree she sounds dumb. But if she can afford it, the upside is that she is supporting the economy. Has she not discovered alterations and clothing dye? She can also swap clothes with other people or buy used clothes. Altering clothes is fun:
Dyeing is fun. Make sure to use dust mask, eye protection and gloves unlike the video. I've only ever used Dharma for professional-grade dye. You can have color fast dyes on your clothes, at least if the thread and fabric are the same material:
I made my own bellydance costumes for a while, and still alter some of my clothes. I'm in LOVE with tshirt laddering. Easy and fun. Applique with ribbon is also fun, easy and cool. It looks like embroidery, but just involves simple sewing stitches. Not video on YT...but here is applique with glue: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BiihnxdAtAY
I went through a time in my 20's where I didn't want to wear the same thing to work more than once a month. I don't know why. But I bought inexpensive clothes and that phase ended when the clothes started falling apart!
It's easy to blame social media but she knows that nobody else is doing what she's doing, she knows it's her problem.
She needs a grip on reality and a good therapist. Maybe avoiding social media would also benefit her.
