that may be true, but if they leave the board shorts on, what's the difference?

Those are the proximate causes. But the deeper question is, what is it about American culture/fashion that marginalizes male speedos? And what is it about say Brazilian culture that espouses the opposite view?

On a worldwide scale, American culture is remarkably tolerant of various unorthodox, unusual, exotic or abstruse lifestyles, values, accouterments and so forth. Here, far more than in Europe or Australia, it's OK for women to wear burkas or men to wear turbans, without being shunned as being weird or nefarious. It's OK for white-collar professionals to have a pierced septum and tattoos. All sorts of manners and behaviors that in otherwise tolerant places would have been marginalized, here are accepted. But there are a few curious and obtruding exceptions, the theme of this thread being one of them.

People are forgetting the purpose of wearing a swimsuit. It shouldn't be to impress anyone or look good. It should be to maximize comfort. I'm a male and I hate trunks. They drag and they're uncomfortable. I think board shorts that come down to my knees look silly. I don't understand how they ever became "cool" because they're not.

Wear what makes you comfortable, not what prudish Americans want you to wear.

Then we moved to another states where the competitive swimmers had to wear speedos. He refused for his first year; then gave in his second year here.

When in Rome . .

He quit competitive swimming his second year in college and the speedos went straight to the trash.

They take them off when they go into the water or lay out in the sun.
